1. What happens to the original file
The single most consequential difference. Some services store a compressed copy and discard the original. That is invisible on a phone screen and very visible in a print. Look for the words “original quality” and, if you cannot find them, ask.
2. Video, and how much of it
Video is where storage cost lives, so it is the first thing cut from entry plans. Check whether video is included at all, the maximum length or file size, and whether it is stored at original quality or transcoded down.
3. The storage window
Not “how much storage” — how long. Thirty days, twelve months and “forever while you subscribe” are three completely different products. Also ask what warning you get before deletion.
4. Bulk download
A gallery without a one-click download of everything is a gallery you will eventually lose. Confirm it exists, that it includes video, and whether it expires.
5. Guest friction
“No app” is claimed universally, but the experiences differ. Does a guest have to type a name? Accept anything? Wait for a page to load a large gallery before uploading? Test it yourself on a phone before you commit — most services have a demo.

Start for free6. Whether it does anything besides collect photos
This is the widest gap in the category. Some products are a shared folder with a nice front end. Others run games, missions, song requests for the DJ, voice and video wishes, a time capsule. If you want the gallery to also give guests something to do, that is a filter that removes most of the market immediately.
7. Moderation and privacy defaults
Check whether the gallery is private by default rather than after you change a setting, whether you can approve photos before guests see them, and whether guests can delete their own uploads — and for how long.
8. Pricing shape
One-time versus monthly, and whether the price scales with guest count. For a single event, per-guest pricing on a large wedding is where budgets get surprised.
How to compare pricing shapes properly9. Whether anyone answers
You will need support on exactly one day, possibly at an awkward hour. Send a question before you buy and see how long the reply takes. This tells you more than any feature table.
A short way to use this
- Shortlist on points 1, 3 and 4 — original files, storage window, bulk download
- Then use point 6 to decide whether you want a gallery or an experience
- Then check pricing shape against your actual timeline
- Test guest friction on a phone before paying for anything
Frequently asked questions
Is the most expensive option usually the best?
No. Price tracks storage window and feature breadth more than quality. A cheaper plan with a twelve-month window and original files can beat a pricier one with thirty days.
Can we switch providers after booking?
Before the wedding, easily — nothing is collected yet. Afterwards it means re-collecting from guests, which rarely works. Decide before you print the QR codes.
